Today’s prompt is to treat yourself to your favourite dinner, it could be a night out at a restaurant, your favourite takeaway treat or maybe a home cooked meal you just can’t get enough of.
There is something that can feel naughty or perhaps selfish to choose your favourite meal for dinner. I thought it might be a mum thing but then I remembered I always would feel a little guilty when I was younger and my mum asked what we wanted to do for dinner and no one would say anything so my suggestion would be picked.
It’s not very often that I have my favourites for dinner, Dylan is picky and Levi is only really getting the hang of eating real foods so for the longest time I have lived on microwave meals as it was just easier and convenient and all 3 of us would have separate meals for dinner.
I personally hate that, I grew up in a family that made meal time a priority. My mother would spend her afternoons cooking these amazing meals for the 6 of us and as dinner time arrived we would all sit around the table and talk together about our days, then after dinner mum would read a few chapters of a book, we would then clean up and go to bed. It was loud and energetic and if you wanted to get a word in edgewise you would end up just talking over someone else but it was our way of coming together as a family, as a unit and I think the amazingly close relationship I share with my sisters has something to do with our dinner time routine.
For that reason when I think about treating myself to dinner, I think about making a delicious home cooked family-style meal where we sit down at the table together, serve ourselves, talk about our day and just enjoy each others company.
Jamie Oliver has some amazing cookbooks but I think the 15-minute meals book is perfect for creating family dinnertime meals that bring everyone together. I have been trying to incorporate them more into our weekly plan but will be treating myself to a recipe from the 30-minute book that not only includes a dinner recipe but also a desert as its Sunday and we have time to sit down and eat before Levi’s bedtime.
