The past few months I have been a little short on time with working full time, Levi, studying an MBA part-time and now falling pregnant.
To combat the race for time I have been searching for ways to extend my days and have found the answer…..
Waking up at 5:30am
While technically I am not adding any extra hours into my regular 24, I have found that my productivity levels triple when I go to bed early. I can then put those previously wasted hours in the evening to better use in the morning when my brain is switched on and ready to go.
But waking up at 5:30am is far easier said than done…….
I have added a few extra steps in my morning routine to help wake up and start my day nice and early.
// Step 1 //
Start the morning with a warm drink.
As soon as my alarm goes off, I get up and head to the kitchen and put the kettle on, this pushes my feet to start moving while my brain may still be a little slow. I like to make a nice hot drink of tea to get myself going. Lately, I have loved lemon and ginger tea with a spoon of honey and apple cider vinegar.
If you prefer coffee over tea that early then get your coffee pods on just give yourself a reason to get out of bed and get up.
I also like to walk around the house while it is quiet and drink at least a litre of cold water as well, this really helps to switch my brain back on and start functioning.
// Step 2 //
Find a comfy spot and meditate.
Find yourself a nice comfortable spot to sit down and meditate for a few minutes, I use the app Headspace and spend 5 to 10 minutes doing a quick morning meditation.
My mornings always get off to a far better start if I have taken a few minutes to myself and really checked in with my mind.
// Step 3 //
I don’t work out every day usually 2 to 3 time per week depending on how I am feeling, however on the days I am want to get a work out in I will put my gym clothes on straight away then head out the door to my local gym and get some sweat time in.
// Step 4 //
Make a wholesome and healthy breakfast.
Making a healthy and filling breakfast is another way to ensure that you are motivated to get up early. I need time to make breakfast and enjoy eating rather than just eating as fast as I can before I run out the door.
The process of making breakfast and sitting down to enjoy it yourself before the rest of the house wakes up is incredibly relaxing and provides a little more inspiration to get up that little bit earlier and treat yourself.
// Step 5 //
I like to spend at least 1/2 an hour reading in the morning, this helps to slowly switch my brain back on and gives me time to escape. I normally read either fiction or self-help as these styles of books are interesting without overloading my brain with too much information too early.
Check out my monthly book club to see what I am currently reading.
// Step 6 //
Plan my day.
I like to pull out my daily diary and just check in with everything I have booked in or plan to do for the day. I will spend a few minutes time blocking my day to get the maximum out of the hours I am not working.
This year I have been using the Day Designer and will be reviewing my thoughts on this style of diary at the end of the year.
// Step 6 //
Once I have prepared for my day I will usually start the work that I need to get done that morning whether it be uni work, blog related, scheduling or house cleaning that I have booked in my calendar for that morning.
I like to keep my desk clean and ready to use that way I have no real excuse not to start the work that I need to get done.
In our household, Levi is up at 6:45am and Dylan takes him to daycare at 7am, by 8am I have normally finished my morning work and can start getting ready for work, styling my hair, putting on makeup and running out the door.
Life can be a little hectic and it’s only going to get busier when the next little bubba arrives but at least there is never a dull moment in our household.
Waking up at 5:30am may seem like a ridiculous idea to begin with but if you are strapped for time it really can help change your life for the better.
